MORE than 600 school children from Rayleigh have been evacuated and sent home for the day after smoke was seen coming from an electricity substation next door to it.
Grove Wood Primary, in Grove Wood, was evacuated shortly before 11am.
All 620 pupils and staff were taken through the woods at the back of the school towards Warwick Road for their safety.
Parents were able to collect their children from the road or later on in the school’s sports hall once it was safe to do so.
Two fire crews from Rayleigh Weir attended the scene and set up a 50-metre hazard zone around the substation. No further action was required from the fire crews, and workmen from UK Power Networks are attending the scene.
