A CHARITY has taken the first step towards building a sensory room for disabled adults.

Crossroads Care Essex, based in Kiln Road, Benfleet, needs to raise around£10,000 to build a sensory room to help adults with a variety of disabilities.

On Saturday, the charity managed to raise around £500 when it held a community fun day.

Sarah Fogarty, from the charity, said they were pleased with the figure but much more needed to be done.

She said: “The room will help people who suffer from sensory impairments and profound disabilities, so it will include things like music and pictures, but also lots of specialist equipment.

“We havearoom in the building that we can use, but unfortunately we have not been successful in gaining funding for the equipment.

“So we are now looking to raise the money ourselves.”

Crossroads cares for people over the age of 16 and currently provides care for 16 people for between one and three days a week. The centre is part funded by Essex County Council with clients paying for their care out of their personal care allowance.

Ms Fogarty added: “We have a really broad range of conditions from learning difficulties to people with cerebral palsy.

“Clients and their families are able to choose their own package of care.

“We look to support our clients and their families and are somewhere people can feel safe and happy.”
