A TEENAGER from Westcliff aims to be the first person with cystic fibrosis to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Hairdresser Joe Tonge, 19, has the disorder, which affects vital organs in the body, especially the lungs, which become progressively more damaged by bacterial infections.

Despite this, Joe is adamant he will complete the climb of 19,341 feet to the top of the African mountain.

He will be joined by work colleague and Grateful Heads salon owner Craig Smith.

Joe said: “It’s going to be a really tough challenge for us both. We’ve been training over the Hadleigh Downs and even that has been hard, but I am in equal measures excited and totally terrified.

“But we are both absolutely determined to do this, not only to raise as much money as we can for this really great charity that does a massive amount for people like me, but also so I can raise awareness about this disease and prove that it won’t stop me living my life to the maximum.”

The pair will spend six days trekking from February 21, next year to raise £8,000 for the Southend Cystic Fibrosis Association.

There is a weekly raffle held at the salon, in Alexandra Street, Southend, and two fundraisers are coming up.

On Saturday, October 19 there is a curry and live music night at the Squeeze Cafe, in Rectory Grove, Leigh, and on Monday, October 28 there will be a quiz night at the Mews, in Nelson Mews, Southend.

Craig said: “People are being really supportive. All our clients are being hugely generous and sponsoring us and asking how they can get involved. Our answer is come to our events.

“They are going to be great fun nights and will raise much-needed money. You can find out more by popping in to the salon, or giving us a call on 01702 340965.”
