RETIREMENT flats look set to replace a derelict dairy depot after the latest plans finally met with acceptance from campaigning neighbours.

Planning officers have recommended Southend Council approve a revised proposal for 32 flats on the site of the former Dairy Crest depot, in Southchurch Boulevard, Southchurch.

The Government threw out the firm’s appeal for similar plans for 35 retirement homes in April after neighbours said the demolition of a 7m-high wall at the rear meant occupants would overlook their homes.

Neighbour Sally Harrison, of Droitwich Avenue, who led the successful year-long campaign to have those plans rejected, said: “This will bring an element of closure.

“It will be a good thing that this site is being regenerated. It is looking increasingly untidy around that area.

“It’s a shame these developers didn’t consider local residents at an earlier stage.

“A lot of time, effort and energy from all parties – from residents and the council – could have been avoided.”
