A TWO-METRE high seawall looks set to be built across Shoebury Common despite 80 per cent of residents opposing it.

Council officers plan to advise Southend Council to push ahead with its £4.6million scheme for an earth embankment to protect 500 homes in Shoebury.

This is despite eight out of ten people in a consultation earlier this year strongly opposing it.

Respondents also opposed two alternative schemes, both of which include a floodwall along Lodwick, Ness Road and Waterford Road.

Engineers fear the risk of flooding is too great for “misinformed” residents to derail the project.

Andy Lewis, the council’s corporate director of place, said: “Our recommendation is the only viable solution is the council’s preferred option of the earth embankment.

“It’s clear from some of the comments made on the forms that people are misinformed about the scheme. They are making their consultation responses based on information that is not accurate.”
