AN Asda supermarket has rushed to help a struggling food bank in Basildon.
Tins and Things operates as part of Community bank, Choices Family Support Service, in Saffron Court, Laindon.
The organisation, which opened last November, is finding it difficult to meet demand.
However, Asda, in Eastgate shopping centre, placed a trolley in the store, allowing customers to donate food while they shop.
Susanna Caira- Neeson, managing director of Choices Family Support Service, said: “It has been hectic. We have got rid of more than two tonnes of food since November.
“To say we are struggling is an understatement. If we had the food then we could provide a better service.”
Paula Howard, from Asda, added: “Choices sent me a letter about donating something a couple of weeks ago, which is when I decided they needed more than a donation.”
The donation trolley will remain at the store over the next few months.
The not-for-profit organisation also welcomes cash donations.
Ms Caira-Neeson said: “We are in desperate need of help. Not only are we running out of food, we also have to pay the rent and utility costs of the building.
“All our staff are volunteers, none of us get paid. We are looking for funds, in both cash and food.
“The organisation is more than just a food bank, we also want to train young people in City and Guilds programmes and for this we need to maintain the warehouse.
“Every penny goes back into the work.”
