Two quick-thinking engineers have been hailed as heroes after breaking into a flat to stop a fire spreading.
Chris Fralkus, 33, and his colleague Timothy Ward, 34, acted swiftly after spotting smoke coming from the windows of the two-storey house in Broadlands, Thundersley, yesterday morning.
The two men, who are both employees at Castle Point Gas and Heating Company, were working in the bathroom of a property opposite at the time.
The pair opened the front window of the house, while Mr Fralkus climbed inside and removed a burning saucepan from the kitchen stove.
Tracey Mason, 44, who lives in the home with her disabled daughter, Sam, 21, said the two men had probably stopped her entire flat from going up in flames.
Ms Mason said: "I think they are heroes. They acted very quickly and I don't know of anyone who'd do that."
