Wanted - a motorist rebuilding his Fiat Punto. Police suspect he could be responsible for the theft of car parts across Canvey.
Puzzled Geoff Thompson was left scratching his head after the bonnet of his Fiat Punto disappeared overnight.
Police say they also had reports of the bumper from a Fiat Punto being stolen and believe it could be the work of someone rebuilding their car.
Geoff, from Weel Road, Canvey, thought he was the victim of a practical joke when a neighbour told him his engine had been left open to the elements.
The Fiat was parked off the road behind gates and up against the garage door.
The thieves caused more than £1,000 worth of damage when they forced the top of the driver's door open to release the bonnet.
The area where the vehicle was parked was protected by a security light, but unfortunately this did not deter the perpetrators.
Mr Thompson said: "I can't believe this could happen right next door to my lounge, under a security lamp.
"My wife and I did not hear a thing, which is surprising as we spent the night getting in and out off bed as one of our dogs was unwell.
"This is so inconvenient because I could not attend a hospital appointment."
A spokesman for Essex Police said the thief could be stealing to order.
He said: "The bonnet was removed between 7pm on January 16 and 8.50am the next day causing damage to the side door.
"We also had a report of the bumper of a black Fiat Punto being stolen in Castle Road, Benfleet, on January 11.
"So, whoever did it may be rebuilding their car."
