Police are hunting a 45-year-old man suspected of a frenzied knife attack that left another man fighting for his life.
People have been warned not to approach Michael Turvey, who is thought to be dangerous and could still be carrying a blade.
Officers want to speak to him in connection with the stabbing of a 57-year-old man who was knifed several times at a home in Penryn, Cornwall, at about 12.50am on Tuesday.
Police believe he then fled the scene and is thought to have travelled to south Essex because he previously lived at addresses in Rochford and Basildon.
Police believe Mr Turvey knew the 57-year-old victim and his family before the attack took place.
PC Baxter Provan, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "I would advise people not to approach him but to call 999 immediately if they see him.
"He has previous addresses in the Basildon and Rochford areas and it is possible he is heading back."
The stabbing victim was taken by ambulance to Royal Cornwall Hospital, where he is said to be in a serious but stable condition.
Police have urged Mr Turvey to contact them.
Anyone who has seen him or knows his whereabouts is asked to telephone 999 immediately.
