Footie fans are gearing up to cycle to April's derby match between Southend United and Colchester at Roots Hall.

But it's not to avoid car chaos or parking problems.

The group is raising money in memory of Colchester United fan Emily Begg, of Wickford, who died in November, aged 14.

Organiser Lea Finch, of Fullers Close, Kelvedon, said she wanted to do something after reading Emily's story.

She said: "One night I saw a picture of Emily's mum, Colleen, a friend from nursing college training days.

"I was really upset to read the story. It's heartbreaking and I really wanted to do something.

"I've already done a couple of long distance bike rides and came up with cycling from ground to ground.

"Unfortunately, the game on Good Friday kicks off at 12.30pm so it will be an early start for us."

Football supporters from both teams will be setting off from Layer Road, Colchester, at 6am, cycling the 40 miles via Maldon. Emily's dad, Stuart, will be joining them.

He said: "Emily would just be so delighted at all the fundraising. I'm going to get my bike out and get training."

Colchester United football players set up a fund in the teenager's memory in November, re-recording the club's anthem, Up The U's, with local punk bands Special Duties and Koopa, and other fundraising initiatives.

The players are raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which looked after Emily during her battle with leukaemia.

So far they have helped collect £6,000, but they aim to raise £10,000.
