Deadly asbestos may have been released when windows in a Canvey pool were shattered by storms, it has been revealed.
The council-run pool at Waterside Farm Sports Centre has been closed since high winds blew out several large windows and damaged its roof two weeks ago.
Staff rushed to seal off the area, fearing more glass could come raining down, but Mark Howard, councillor responsible for leisure, has not ruled out the risk they could have been exposed to asbestos.
Until now, Castle Point Council has not told the public why it was forced to close the pool.
Mr Howard said: "Staff were aware of the imminent danger of more windows popping out.
"They didn't think about the danger of asbestos.
"They were more worried about falling glass.
"We minimised the risk to staff and closed the building down because it was unsafe.
"Where the windows came out is where we have had a previous problem with asbestos, so there was concern.
"We have sealed everything in to make sure it is safe. There was a dusty substance so I am not taking any chances."
