The Women’s Royal Voluntary Service continues to play a vital role in south Essex more than 80 years after the organisation was first formed.

The largest volunteering organisation in British history was established in 1938.

It was initially founded to assist civilians during and after air raids by providing emergency rest centres, feeding, first aid and to organise the evacuation and billeting of children.

After the Second World War, it transformed to become a leading organisation in the field of social care, pioneering the practices that formed the cornerstone of modern social services today.
