A KITCHEN door flew across two lanes of busy A127 traffic before slamming into the side of a moving car.

Terrified Sophie Rhodes, who was driving to work, was left terrified after the ordeal which saw high winds fling the door from a lorry into her Mercedes.

The lorry, travelling towards Southend on Friday morning, in the opposite direction to Sophie, had an uncovered load, according to the 22-year-old apprentice ambulance worker.

Miss Rhodes, from Benfleet, has been left fearful of driving on the dual carriageway again, and is thanking her lucky stars it “wasn’t any worse.”

She said: “It completely came out of nowhere, I only just saw it before it hit my car. I had no idea what it was. It then covered my windscreen before blowing off.

“I couldn’t see where I was going at all. I was lucky I didn’t swerve into the outside lane.”

Her Mercedes A class was towed to a garage on Monday morning.

Repairs are anticipated to take at least two weeks.

The car was left with dents to the driver door and the roof, and a destroyed wing mirror.

Miss Rhodes added: “I was so terrified, I’m still in a state of shock.

“You never think things like this happen, let alone to you.

“It all happened so quickly. It looks like a kitchen door. Lorry drivers pulled over and managed to retrieve it from the road.

“Luckily it hit my car flat. If one of the corners had hit my window it could have been a lot worse.

“Nine times out of ten the people involved have some control over what happens in a car crash, but this was totally out of my control.”

Several drivers pulled over to help. Sophie is due to qualify with the East of England Ambulance service in a couple of months.

The 22-year-old believes her training as an ambulance driver stopped her from swerving into other cars. Essex Police were contacted for comment.
