MORE than 100 cyclists have been given a ticking-off by police over the past three months for riding illegally through Southend town centre.

Ten riders also have been handed £30 fines for ignoring warnings, under an operation to enforce town centre bike laws, prompted by complaints from residents.

Neighbourhood specialist officer PC Kathrine Binks came up with the idea of placing hanging signs on bikes to warn cyclists about breaking the rules.

PC Binks said: "They inform the cyclist Southend High Street is a no-cycle area, and they also offer crime prevention advice.

"We find the cyclist's main excuse when we challenge them is lack of information, so with the hangers, as well as posters at either end of the High Street, there is no excuse for anyone to risk a £30 penalty."
