Only 18 food outlets out of 787 across the district achieved five out of five from Basildon Council's environmental health officers, as revealed in last Friday's Echo.

The extensive survey looked at premises' hygiene, food safety, management, training, storage and structural standards.

Cafe Giardino, in Basildon's Eastgate Centre, was one of the restaurants which was given five stars.

Boris Antaf, 26, assistant manager, said: "We are very pleased and proud of this.

"This is the place Basildon needed and the five stars we have been given just proves this.

"Our cleaning is the most important thing. We provide proper training according to hygiene standards."

Dizzy Ducks Day Nursery, in Perry Street, Billericay, which prepares food for 30 children aged up to five, also got the top mark.

Nursery manager Jackie Lavelle, 28, said: "Hygiene has to be of a high standard because we need to give children the best start in life.

"I think today parents look for high standards and quality on a child's menu.

"Hopefully, more children will come through our doors as a result of this.

"We will definitely be putting the certificate up for parents to see." Claire Jollissfe, 25, manager at Ask Pizza and Pasta restaurant, in High Street, Billericay, which also gained five stars, said the survey gave customers more choice.

He said: "The survey is a good idea because people can see the standards of where they are eating."

"I think it shows this company has high health and safety standards, which are maintained all the time.

"It feels brilliant because it's an excellent achievement."

However, the survey gave 39 food outlets no stars.

They were judged to have poor standards of hygiene, food safety and management, and could risk prosecution if they fail to improve.

A two-year Basildon Council survey checked 787 premises, ranging from restaurants to school canteens, and gave them ratings, from zero to five stars.

Of the hundreds inspected, 39 were given no stars and were judged to have poor hygiene, management, safety, training, storage and structural standards. A further 69 gained just a single star.

Inspectors were so impresseed with 18 outlets, they gave them five-star ratings in the survey, based on inspections by environmental health officers.

Basildon Council leader Malcolm Buckley is worried about the number of poor premises revealed by the research.

He said: "I hope they respond.

"If they have got zero or one they would be issued with notices by environmental health officers to act upon. We can prosecute in certain cases.

"There have been a number of prosecutions in the last few years.

"That shows the council will act in a robust manner against those not maintaining standards, but we would rather they comply in the first place."

He warned prosecution usually meant fines but can, in severe cases, result in the premises being shut down.

More than 500 outlets received a score of two stars or above.

The rest were eventually not graded because they were considered "low risk" since food sold at them was not prepared on the premises.

Mr Buckley added: "We have to look on the positive side. We can be pleased restaurants have achieved good standards in the main."

Cafe Giardino, in the Eastgate Centre, Basildon, was one of the restaurants given a five-star rating.

Manager Carlos Honrado, 29, said: "I always take time to make sure everything is cleaned properly after we close in the evening."
