TEENAGERS made the most of their half-term holidays by carrying out acts of kindness for residents.

The initiative was part of Love Southend Youth's community events in Southchurch, which aimed to put a smile on as many faces as possible.

It saw teenagers gardening, cleaning, and taking rubbish to the tip for those unable to make the trip themselves.

The group also held a fun day in Bournes Green and a pampering day for mothers in Whittingham Methodist church.

This was followed by football matches, a tea party hosted at St Edmund's community centre for local residents, and a large-scale clean up at Milton Hall School in Westcliff.

Organiser Steve Dalley said: "While other teenagers were enjoying lie-ins, day-time soaps, and general holiday fun and games, these delegates actually paid £10 each for the privilege of helping to host events to benefit the wider community."

The youngsters were made up of representatives from local churches, schools and youth groups.

They met each day at 10.30am to spend time together in worship and prayer for the day ahead, before the community events got underway.

Mr Dalley said: "Much was achieved and the delegates were given the opportunity to find for themselves that the greatest satisfaction in life is gained by seeking to help and love others in any ways possible."
