BURGLARS are to be caught bang to rights with the launch of a new squad dedicated to snaring them.
Detectives at Billericay CID have set up the burglary team in a bid to target, catch and stop the thieves who make their living breaking into people's homes.
In recent months police have seen an increase in the number of offences, with jewellery, high-value electrical goods and even cars stolen during break-ins.
Since January, more than 50 homes have been broken into across Billericay and Wickford. But several of the raids could have been avoided after thieves got in through open doors and windows.
Now detectives Steven Wilson and Andrew Rowe are heading up the squad, in charge of investigating raids in Billericay and Wickford.
Det Con Steven Wilson said: "We have continued to see a rise in the number of burglaries across Basildon and Wickford.
"Unfortunately, in several cases the victims have not helped themselves by leaving windows and doors open.
"If victims took these simple steps they would save themselves the heartache, inconvenience and money that goes with being the victim of a burglary."
Det Con Andrew Rowe added: "For some victims of burglary, the thought of having a stranger in their home, going through and stealing their personal belongings, never leaves them. They can feel uncomfortable and nervous to be in their own home.
"But if they help themselves, and us, by investing in alarms, and securely locking their homes and remaining vigilant at all times, they can help us beat the burglars."
The detectives are also being backed by a team of police community support officers who have been delivering leaflets to residents in both towns.
