HE spearheaded the eighties psychedelic renaissance with legendary Southend band, Le Mat, now guitarist Pete Helmer is back in Essex with his new outfit self procliamed quintissentialy English' Reilly Peacock.
The band bring their own brand psychedelic indie to the Ship pub in Leigh on Saturday, May 31 when they launch their debut album - Introducing a Wonder of the Age.
Inspired by an obsession with the human psyche Helmer formed Reilly Peacock in 2006 creating an outlet for the collection of tunes he had been brewing in his head since Le Mat disbanded in the mid eighties.
Having experimented with solo acoustic gigs Helmer headed out on a mission to recruit a band eventually finding himself on Canvey.
The result was a final lineup including guitarist Bruce Williams, bassist Brian Lewis, drummer Matt Muller and keyboardist Gerald Williams.
Combining the solid song writing of their heroes Squeeze and Brian Wilson with more obscure influences such as "a sense of the ancient" and Mary Poppins, Reilly Peacock make dreamlike pyschedelia showcased in songs like Burning Ships and Coney Island High.
With the launch of their album this spring it looks like Helmer could be at the centre of another psychedelic renaissance- this time one for the 21st century.
The album is available from Fives Records in Leigh Broadway.
