PROUD families cheered and applauded people with learning disabilities who were honoured for improving their lives and helping others.
Certificates of achievement were given to people from across south Essex who overcame various obstacles to make a success of their lives.
About 25 people, of all ages, were given awards at the ceremony at the annual Mencap awards at Southend's Civic Centre.
Two silver cups were given to outstanding achievers in the under-20s and adult categories.
The main council chamber was packed with winners, their families and carers and the people who nominated them.
Audience members were treated to heartwarming stories, which varied from youngsters doing well at school or college, adults exceeding expectations in the world of work to people remaining positive despite considerable medical problems.
Southend Lib Dem councillor Ric Morgan was the host of the ceremony and handed out the awards. He said: "Everyone in this room is a winner - nominators and carers as well. You have all contributed to the achievements of our winners tonight."
Southend Mencap president Joe Dorado added: "Tonight was wonderful, especially the fact that the nominators were here to detail the reasons why the certificates were given.
"Some of the achievements of people with learning difficulties is quite breathtaking.
"It's only when you see them from year to year you see that their ability to develop as individuals never dies. I'm so proud of them all."
Mencap is a national charity that helps people with learning disabilities and their families lead a full life.
