TWO decades after it was opened by celebrity Jason Donovan, the Royals Shopping Centre celebrated its 20th birthday with a champagne breakfast.
Southend mayor Daphne White was one of many dignitaries who tucked into smoked salmon and other culinary treats after they were welcomed by centre manager Dawn Jeakings.
She said: "It was originally opened by Jason Donovan early in 1988 and is at one end of the longest high street in Essex.
"I would like to thank everybody who has made the Royals the place to shop in Southend and especially town centre manager Marzia Abel."
Ms Jeakings said the design was well ahead of its time and she looked forward to the next 20 years.
