SOUTHEND Shakespeare Company has won an award for its production of a French play.
The Palace Theatre Club voted the group's take on Moliere's Le Tartuffe the best amateur play of 2007.
Company chairman Jim Carter, 43, of Ambleside Drive, Southend, said: "It was a shock and a surprise. We put on Tartuffe shortly after the Palace reopened and it was great to be there.
"The play is 17th century, but the translation had been updated with 21st-century phrases."
