SCORES of dog-lovers from all over south Essex met to support the Essex branch of the charity, Basset Hound Welfare.
Most dogs present were bassets, many of which had found new homes thanks to the charity which advises owners on managing the breed and helps rehome animals when owners can longer keep them.
The group met in Hylands Park, Chelmsford, for a walk and to exchange stories and advice about their dogs.
Bassets are hunting dogs, known for their independent nature and ability to follow a trail by scent, which is second only to bloodhounds.
Essex representative of the charity, Sally Money, from Great Dunmow, said: "It was a really good turnout and it seemed everyone enjoyed the walk.
"We had people come from all the neighbouring counties, and as far away as Norfolk and Buckinghamshire."
Following the walk, many of the dog lovers sat down to a picnic and chatted about their animals.
An impromptu collection at the event raised about £80 for the charity. Mrs Money said: "Many people don't know about this charity, which is why some bassets end up in rescue kennels."
There will be another basset walk on May 11 in Suffolk. Anyone interested in attending, or who wants advice, or help with their basset hound, can contact Mrs Money on 01371 873210.
