DINERS at a restaurant in Southend could be forgiven for thinking they have been transported to the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
Bacchus in Alexandra Road, formerly San Fairie Ann, has a 650 square-foot copy of Michelangelo’s the Last Judgement across the ceiling.
The replica of the 16th-century painting is in the main dining area, the aptly-named Renaissance Room.
The original is found on the wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, Rome.
Proprietor Sonia Edwards said: “It pretty much put my budget, literally, through the ceiling, but I loved the idea.
“It was quite an indulgence, but that’s what Bacchus is all about so I could justify it to myself that way. Everyone loves it though. It’s well worth the thousands it cost.”
The restaurant recently reopened as Bacchus – the Roman god of wine and revelry – after a makeover with a Heaven and Hell theme.
