A have-a-go-hero re-called how a thug whipped him around the head with a leash after he tried to stop a vicious dog attacking a woman.
Geoff Blain, 59, from Pitsea, stepped in as the man verbally abused a woman while his dog, believed to be a pitbull, went for her tiny terrier.
The thug turned violent and left former soldier Mr Blain bloodied and battered in the street.
Mr Blain said he was disappointed none of the passers-by came to his aid as the drama unfolded in Clay Hill Road, Basildon.
He said: “I think it’s disgusting British people could stand by and let this happen. I was standing up for a woman and then I was covered in blood and no-one helped me.”
