A 22-STOREY skyscraper could soon tower above Southend's seafront, dwarfing nearby buildings in a new redevelopment plan for a derelict office block.
The latest proposals for the site of Esplanade House, in Eastern Esplanade, have just been submitted to Southend Council.
If the project goes ahead, it would also see the return of plans for a bar, restaurant and other facilities on the old Corporation Loading Pier opposite.
The futuristic proposals are the brainchild of local developers Robert Leonard Estates, whose earlier plans for the site were rejected by the council last year.
An integral part of the 74m-high building is 168 student rooms, with warden accommodation, in partnership with the University of Essex Southend to support its new campus.
Also proposed are 199 flats, a 38-bedroom hotel and restaurant and retail floorspace at the front of the building with a piazza.
