FIREFIGHTERS from Essex and Kent are trying to trace the cause of smoke in the Channel Tunnel rail link in Thurrock.
Crews from Grays, Orsett, Corringham and Brentwood stations were called about 5.50pm today to the link, which is in Oliver Road near the QEII crossing.
They were alerted by a Eurostar train driver who said he spotted a track side fire.
But about 8pm, the officer in charge said there were no apparent signs of fire.
Trains are believed to have been halted so there are no casualties or vehicles damaged.
Crews have used breathing apparatus when entering the tunnel, but have not used firefighting equipment because overhead lines are still live.
