THE first swimmers have taken the plunge at Southend’s new £13.5million pool at Garon Park.

Mary-Anne Therrien, from Southchurch, was the first person to try it out after she won a Southend Council competition and dived in with her husband and father-in-law on Friday evening.

Mrs Therrien, 43, said: “My family and I feel very privileged to be here enjoying this facility first.”

Her husband Richard Therrien, 41, said: “This is an outstanding venue. It’s an honour to experience the first swim. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”
