TWO entertainers have overcome serious illness to make sure this weekend’s Canvey’s Got Talent is bigger and better than ever.
Event organiser James O’Brien and his Elvis impersonating side-kick Pat Byrne are both recovering after suffering heart attacks in the last six months.
However, the upbeat pair are determined their recoveries will not get in the way of making this Sunday’s show the best in the event’s four-year history.
Mr O’Brien said: “It’s been a funny old time. We’ve both visited each other in hospital and we’re now both going through rehab.
“It was a bit of bad luck. I’m not in the best of shape and Pat’s just Pat.
“I’ve had to get two new Elvis impersonators as back-up because I’m not sure he will be up to it.
“But the show must go on and this Canvey’s Got Talent is going to be the best ever.”
The variety show, which will be held at Thorney Bay Park caravan site, is in its fourth year.
Past winners include Georgia Garrett, who has recorded an album of class Vera Lynn songs, and Castle View School pupil Bethany Goward.
They will both be giving guest performances at this year’s show, as will dance act K2.
This year’s winner will be given the opportunity to perform at the Castle Point Show and Canvey Town Council Summer Fun Day.
Canvey’s Got Talent is more than just a singing contest, and contestants and audience members will be invited to join in with clown Mr Giggles, who will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most high fives in a minute.
Mr O’Brien added: “It’s open to everyone, you don’t need to be talented, you just need a pulse, which is something both me and Pat are struggling with at the moment.”
There will also be bouncy castles, an open air swimming pool and a barbecue.
The event takes place from noon.
