THURROCK MP Jackie Doyle-Price has persuaded the Government to bring in tighter controls on workplace drug-testing.

The Tory politician challenged ministers on the issue after hearing about the case of a constituent who faced dismissal from work following an erroneous test.

She said: “I became concerned after looking at the case that employers and trade unions simply are not aware of the inherent risks in this process, which could lead to someone being unfairly treated.

“It is good from a health and safety perspective that firms are introducing testing processes, but these tests can act as judge and jury towards employees and it is important the rights and reputations of staff are not placed at risk by a poor testing process.”

Employment relations minister Ed Davey has now agreed to press ahead with Mrs Doyle-Price’s request for stricter guidelines over drug testing procedures in the workplace.
