TRAFFIC lights could also be switched off, if a south Essex MP gets his way.
John Baron, Tory MP for Basildon and Billericay, wants traffic lights turned off late at night.
He spoke after Essex County Council decided to turn street lights off at night to save cash.
He believes it would improve the county’s carbon footprint.
Mr Baron said: “I would prefer the county council to switch traffic lights off between midnight and 5am. This would speed journeys and help the environment.
“ I am going to be continuing to focus on the traffic lights.
"I have been campaigning for a long time to get them switched off because it would cut emissions, cut down journey times and cut down the wear and tear on our cars.”
