Emergency crews were called to the banks of the waterway, off Fambridge Road, at about 9.45am on Saturday when passers by spotted a man lying flat out on the mud just metres from the water.
Fire fighters used a stretcher and ropes to hoist the casualty up a ten-foot sea wall and he was transferred to waiting paramedics.
The man has ben taken to Southend Hospital, where his injuries are described as non-life threatening.
