A THREE-FOOT snake has been found dumped in a rubbish bin.
The shocking find has prompted animal control officers at Basildon Council to issue a warning to owners of other exotic pets to ensure they care for their animals properly. The royal python is believed to have been maltreated before it died.
It was found lying in a food waste bin in the communal area of a block of flats in Pamplins, Laindon, on Tuesday.
It is thought the snake had been dead for a few days after a vivarium was found dumped alongside the flats a few days earlier. It was found lying in a food waste bin in the communal area of a block of flats in Pamplins, Laindon on Tuesday.
The reptile’s body was also thin and had mites causing animal control officers to believe it may not have been cared for properly in the time leading to its death.
Sarah Moran, Basildon Council’s animal control officer, said: “My concern is that the snake had not received any veterinary treatment or care.
“People should not keep exotic pets, or any pets, if they do not know how to look after them properly and do not have the finances to provide for it.
“Pets such as snakes need special care and are notoriously difficult feeders so need to be kept in the correct conditions and unfortunately many people do not realise this until they buy them.
“Dead animals should not be disposed of in this way either, and pet owners should speak with their vet to make appropriate arrangements for disposal.”
