THE mum of a man held in a Spanish jail accused of attempted murder has sold her home to raise cash for the legal fight.
Sharon Harris, 56, only put her three-bed home on the market at the end of last month – it sold within a week.
The property in Brunswick Road, Southend, was up for £255,000 and went for just under the asking price.
Mrs Harris is the mother of Kyle Thain, 24, who has been held without charge in a prison in Alicante, with his friend, James Harris, 29, since July 8.
The pair are accused of stabbing two men in a bar near Alicante, close to where they were staying on a long weekend away.
Regarding the sale, Mrs Harris said: “It was an absolute shock.
“We had three offers and we’ve sold it to a couple from Buckhurst Hill who have two boys at university.”
The Echo revealed Mrs Harris and husband Dave, 58, were considering selling the home at the end of August. Mrs Harris added: “We had just got our heads around the decision to actually sell and then it was done.
“The whole point was to generate money to help Kyle.
“At the moment we are putting everything on cards, and it is really stacking up so this will really help.”
Mr and Mrs Harris have lived in Brunswick Road for about four years, and recently finished doing the property up after gutting it soon after they moved in.
They are moving, with their daughter Georgina, 20, to a two-bedroom flat in nearby Kensington Road. Kyle, of Sandringham Road, Southend, and his friend James, of Pelham Road, Southend, were arrested as they went to board a plane home.
However, the pair maintain they never even went to the bar where the violence took place, and their families insist there has been a terrible case of mistaken identity.
Trying to remain positive, Mrs Harris said a new solicitor has been hired in Spain who speaks fluent English and has an office near the prison, meaning he is in regular contact with the two men.
But she said: “We won’t be doing a proper Christmas this year, not without Kyle.”
The two men, who were refused bail again last month, are waiting for phone records to be released which they say will prove they were not at the bar at the time of the incident.
