TWO men were arrested as they were allegedly about to sell stolen trolleys to a scrap yard as part of the latest crackdown on metal theft.
The men, from Basildon, were arrested as police launched a crackdown on metal thieves who have plagued South Essex in recent years.
Officers from Laindon were joined by Basildon Council benefit fraud investigators and environmental enforcement staff, officers from British Transport Police and cable theft investigators from British Telecom.
Police put a road block in force at one end of Wrexham Road, Laindon, yesterday morning, and every vehicle driving into was stopped and checked by police.
Codenamed Operation Bodmin, the aim of the crackdown was to catch out anyone ferrying stolen metal to either of the two srapyards in the road – Laindon Metal and Mackers Metal.
The arrested men were found in possession of shopping trolleys, some of which belonged to Asda.
A 30-year-old man was cautioned for theft and possesion of cannabis and a 23-year-old man was cautioned for theft.
