RESIDENTS say they feel like prisoners after metal railings were put up by the council to cut down on antisocial behaviour.
A row has broken put between the homeowners and Basildon Council about the railings, which separate an alleyway and car park in The Willows, Pitsea.
The council says it put up the railings after residents asked for measures to be taken to stop youths hanging around the area.
The new railings replace a previous brick wall. However, some residents said it is like they are living in prison.
Jan Benson, 64, whose house looks out on the 10ft-high metal fence, said: “I am really upset about this.
“We have been campaigning for years to have the brick wall replaced.
“We never thought the council would put something like that in its place.
“It is an eyesore and makes us all feel like we are living in a prison.”
Jan’s husband, Graham Benson, 65, added: “There is no need for a fence like this to be put up. It makes the estate look very rough and that bad things happen here.
“It is a nice, family place. When friends have come round everyone has commented on how terrible it looks.”
Peter Long, the council’s repairs service manager, said: "The wall, which was in a state of deterioration, was taken down and replaced with a metal fence at the request of residents who had complained of antisocial behaviour in the area.
“The wall was being used as a meeting place for youths and residents had complained reinstating the wall would make it easier for them to sit on.
“After looking at the suitability of repairing the wall and considering health and safety, it was decided to proceed with installing a metal fence.
“That was the preferred option of neighbouring residents.”
