TRAVELLERS were last night returning to Dale Farm.
Families evicted from the illegal site appear to be carrying out a threat to move back on to a legal part of Oak Lane within the unauthorised site, which was not cleared during the Basildon Council operation.
There were up to 12 caravans back on the land last night, which is not covered by the High Court injunction preventing reoccupation of the site.
Basildon Council leader Tony Ball said: “It is a concern. Five of the caravans are running off one generator.”
He said this could be a safety risk.
The council is investigating if the road is an approved highway or right of way. If so it should be able to get an order to remove them on grounds of obstruction.
However, Stuart Hardwicke-Carruthers, 52, a campaigner for the families, said more caravans would soon be arriving.
He also said they had been planning to return since Sunday.
He said: “They really have nowhere else to go. By 10am today there will be 30 caravans on there. Because it is not covered by the injunction, it could take months to move them.”
