A TORY MP is calling on the Government to take tough action on metal thieves targeting war memorials.
In recent weeks, several monuments, dedicated to those who have lost their lives in conflicts, have had lead or iron plaques stolen from them.
Conservative Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has signed a Commons’ motion calling for tougher action for those convicted of involvement in both the theft and the disposal of metal stolen from war memorials and places of worship.
He said: “At this solemn time of year, when we remember those who fell to protect our freedoms, there is a small, despicable group of people who go round stealing metal from war memorials.”
