ANTI-CAPITALIST activists could set up camp in Southend this weekend.
A Facebook page has been started, called Occupy Southend, and it states demonstrators will arrive at 10am on Sunday to pitch their pop-up tents.
Authors of the Facebook site have not said where in Southend they are heading, only that it is a “well-known location”.
Information on the anonymous site urges people to come along and protest.
It says: “For too long now the ordinary people of this country have suffered at the hands of the very few. We are the many, and as such we will occupy Southend.
“The banks and the corporations have created a world not fit for purpose, and we won’t tolerate their way of greed, and their way of control any more.
“Each Occupy gathering around the country and around the world has developed its own personality, and we in Southend will naturally create our own.”
Southend Council says any encampments on council-owned land will be faced with the full force of the law.
Rob Tinlin, chief executive, said: “The council supports the democratic right of its residents to take part in lawful protest.
“However, in the event that any council-owned land becomes unlawfully occupied we will follow our usual processes to ensure it is cleared for public access as soon as possible.”
The Facebook page has laid out information about toilet facilities, electricity and first aid. It also says alcohol and drugs are banned from the site.
Essex Police said officers were aware of the planned protest and were monitoring the situation.
The Occupy protest started in Kuala Lumpur on July 30 this year followed by others in New York City and San Francisco on September 17.
It has now spread across the globe.
In London, Occupy London Stock Exchange protesters have camped outside St Paul’s Cathedral, but were served notice to leave the site by 6pm yesterday.
