A POPPY appeal tin was stolen from a Leigh church on Remembrance Sunday.
The red collection pot, containing an estimated £60 in cash, was stolen at some point between 3pm and 5pm on Remembrance Sunday, November 13, from Wesley Church in Elm Road, Leigh.
Members of the public had been invited to take refreshments in the church after a service at nearby St Clements Church and it is believed that was when the collection pot was stolen.
An Essex Police spokeswoman said: “Any theft of charity money is sickening but it doesn’t get much lower than the theft of a poppy appeal pot on Remembrance Sunday. If you were in or around Wesley Church on the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday and saw someone acting strangely, please let police know so we can make every effort to identify the suspect.”
The matter is being investigated by PC Hazel Williams, who can be contacted at Leigh police station on 101.
