TUNEFUL school pupils hit the right notes as they recorded backing vocals for McFly frontman Tom Fletcher’s Olympic song.

Youngsters at West Leigh Junior School, Leigh, feature on the song, On a Rainbow, which is the official London 2012 mascot song.

The ten pupils who recorded the backing harmonies were chosen at random by the school to take part.

The single features on the London 2012 website and is available to download on the internet.

Cheryl Woolf, the school’s headteacher, said: “One of our parents was producing the record and we have a strong musical tradition at the school.

“Nearly half of our 514 children are in a choir or involved in a musical group, so he asked if we would like to take a small group to record part of the song.”

Mrs Woolf said the children travelled to a recording studio in Hampstead for the recording in January.

Within the past week, pupils were delighted when they discovered the song has been chosen to tell the story of Olympic mascots Mandeville and Wenlock.

A short film on the London 2012 website shows Wenlock and Mandeville being created from the last two drops of steel from the Olympic Stadium.

The film also shows their journey as they continue on an adventure across the UK, inspiring young people to take up sport.

The song, which accompanies the film, was written by the pop rock band’s lead singer and guitarist, but sadly he recorded his part separately from the youngsters.

But Mrs Woolf said: “It was a great experience for the children.

“They saw how a proper recording studio works and they enjoyed it at the time, but they are over the moon, now they know the song is being used.”
