AVERAGE speed cameras have been put up on the Dartford Crossing bridge to combat congestion and accidents.
The Highways Agency hope the cameras will be in use early next year to enforce the 50mph limit.
Officials have said the cameras will result in a more consistent traffic flow, as well as resulting in fewer accidents and improved safety of staff at the toll booths.
Essex Police will monitor the bridge and cameras and fine anyone caught speeding.
Peter Saunders, chairman of Chadwell Community Forum who are campaigning against the proposed toll increases, said: βIt will not make the slightest bit of difference to congestion. Anyone who regularly uses the bridge knows traffic comes in peaks and troughs and putting cameras on the bridge will not change this.β
Research by the agency shows a significant number of vehicles exceed the speed limit, especially at night. A spokesman said the cameras were planned as part of the revision to the toll charges.
