A DISABLED woman who couldn’t climb the stairs in her house because her condition had deteriorated so badly has finally been offered a suitable home, thanks to the Echo.
Susan Wade, 50, of Victoria Road, Laindon, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007, and due to the deterioration of her condition can no longer climb the stairs to her upstairs bathroom.
Her mum, Diane Hilton, 69, of Lower Dunton Road, feared for her daughter’s health as she is now entirely bedridden and she can only be washed by carers in her bed.
Miss Wade, who has been on the housing list for property with downstairs wash facilities for four years, has now been offered a two- bedroom bungalow in Pitsea, which could be renovated to better suit her needs.
Mrs Hilton said: “I am absolutely over the moon. We have been very patient and I just hope the house will be lovely for her.
“I think her story in the Echo really made a difference. I mean it was only in the paper three weeks ago and yet we had spent four years getting nowhere.”
Miss Wade, who is attended by two carers four times a day, was admitted to hospital last year after she became so depressed about her situation that she starved herself.
One of the main problems with her current home is that the doors were not wide enough to fit a wheelchair through, meaning Miss Wade spent almost all her time in bed indoors, as family members struggled to get her out of the house.
Mo Slade, Basildon Council's manager of housing choice, said: "The council has been actively seeking a suitable property for Miss Wade.
“Today, Miss Wade and her family went to view a property and she is happy with it. The property needs to be adapted to suit her needs. The council’s aids and adaptations team will contact her on Friday with a tenancy date.”
