A STREETDANCE school launched 20 years ago has proved critics wrong by becoming one of the most successful training centres of its kind.

Lorraine Field, 46, founded Wiggles in 1991, to offer youngsters an alternative to the popular ballet, tap, modern and ballroom classes.

The first streetdance troupe in the UK, Get With It, was formed in 1990. Lorraine quickly launched her own breakdance and hip-hop classes.

Many believed the American dance style would not catch on in Essex.

She said: “I loved watching these amazing dancers like MC Hammer. I realised there were no places where the kids could go and learn what they were seeing. Mums said they were letting their children come to the classes for fun, but they saw no future in it.

“It has taken a while for everyone to catch up and take us seriously.”

Wiggles started from humble beginnings, in church halls throughout Hockley, Rayleigh and Rochford, before moving into its studio in Aviation Way, Southend, where it has been for the past 16 years.

Lorraine, who used to compete in Latin American dance tournaments as a youngster, said: “I always made sure the kids looked really cool. I remember going to a competition where all the dancers were wearing sequins. Then we walked in with our sneakers and hoodies.”

Streetdance is very popular thanks to TV shows, such as Britain’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance. The former uncovered south Essex dance stars Diversity.

One of the biggest success stories of the school is Christabelle Field, Lorraine’s daughter, who was trained at the studio from a young age and now plays a major part in choreographing routines.

The 24-year-old is one of the country’s top industry dancers and a former West End Thriller Live cast member, who has also toured with the likes of JLS, Will.I.Am and Ne-Yo.

Lorraine added: “We always make sure our pupils are trained to industry standard.

“It makes me feel proud, because I was up against a lot of prejudice in the early days.”
