THE demolition of the Royal Court tower blocks could be affecting the health of neighbours and their pets, it has been claimed.
Ron Blay, 80, of King Edwards Road, Laindon, said the grinding down of concrete from the demolished tower blocks has led to a thick layer of dust in people’s gardens.
He said: “I live right opposite the new shop which has been built and my back garden is covered in dust. My dog has skin trouble and has been in a terrible state. I took him to the vet and they said the cement dust is an irritant and he has been treated with cream.”
Mr Blay said his wheelie bins and plant pots have been covered in a layer of dust.
He is concerned there may be asbestos at the site, which could affect people’s breathing. However the council says the site has been checked and there is no asbestos.
Mr Blay added: “We both suffer sore throats and I can’t say if it is the dust or a bug. I am concerned at what we are breathing in. It can’t do anyone any good that amount of dust.”
The two tower blocks have been torn down, but workers are now grinding the concrete remains on site.
Mr Blay said following his complaints he was told water would be used to damp it down and limit dust but it is not always happening.
Ash Ahmed, Basildon Council policy and development manager, said: “The matter was looked into and it was found the contractor has carried out the demolition of these blocks in line with health and safety regulations.
“The demolition was compliant with the necessary demolition notices issued by the council and there is no concern over asbestos contamination as this was removed from the site in a safe manner prior to the demolition of the blocks.”
