AN Olympic badge designed by a Wickford schoolgirl is now on sale in shops across the land.
Beauchamps High School’s Beth Siddle won a national competition to create her own version of the London 2012 promotional mascot, Wenlock.
A version of the one-eyed character wearing the outfit she devised appears on a pin badge which is being sold for £5 a time in John Lewis and official London 2012 shops, as well as on the John Lewis website.
More than 2,500 British school and college pupils entered the competition to design versions of the mascot which represented their town or area.
Beth’s design was shortlisted in the East of England heat and went on to the national final in London.
Beth, 14, who lives in Wickford, said: “The jigsaw pieces in my design represent the different members of the community in Wickford and how they all fit together.
“The green areas represent how environmentally friendly our area has become, thanks to recycling.”
For the finals, Beth had to pitch her design to a judging panel, including former Olympic triple jump gold medallist Jonathan Edwards, Paralympic wheelchair basketball player Ade Adepitan and London 2012’s head of education Nick Fuller.
After being chosen as one of 12 national winners, Beth spent the day with a London design agency, working on an animated 3-D version of her design.
