BRITT Assombalonga was a happy man after ending his goal drought to fire Southend United to a terrific 4-1 triumph at Torquay United on Saturday.

The Blues striker had gone five games without hitting the back of the net.

And he was therefore delighted to bag a brace at the Plainmoor Stadium.

“I hadn't ever gone five games without scoring before and it wasn't very nice so ending the run was fantastic and I'm really pleased,” said Assombalonga, who is with Southend on loan from Watford.

“I kept on working hard when things weren't going my way because when you do that I think you get your rewards.

“Mine came at Torquay and to win here 4-1 is a very good result because they hadn't been beaten at home this season before playing us so we're feeling really good.

“We came out on fire and put in a really good performance.”

The emphatic victory pushed Blues up to 10th in the League Two table, just two points below the play-offs.

But Assombalonga felt he should have had even more to be celebrating after having what would have been a third goal ruled out for offside.

“For me I got a hat-trick because I came from the blind side of the defender and there was no way I was offside,” said the 19-year-old.

“The linesman obviously didn't want me to have a third goal so I'll have to save that for another day now.

“However, after not scoring for a little while I'm perfectly happy to have got two.”

Assombalonga's striking partner, Gavin Tomlin, also scored twice against the Gulls.

And Blues boss Paul Sturrock was full of praise for his front two.

“You have to give credit to them both because they ran Torquay ragged,” said Sturrock.

“If I'm being honest, Britt had been starting to worry me as he was looking up all that superstitious stuff like what boots he was going to wear so I am glad he is back on the score-sheet again.

“He's a young boy and he has a great career ahead of him because he's not just a finisher.

“He relates to the other striker but we did well all over the pitch and everyone did what was required of them.

“We need to take this kind of performance to AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday now but they've been doing well lately and it will be a hard game for us there.”
