A HARD earned point against the league leaders in horrid conditions stretched Concord’s unbeaten streak to seven games.

Goals from Danny Spendlove and Nicky Cowley helped the Beachboys to a 2-2 draw against Whitehawk at a soaking wet Aspects Arena.

Concord dominated possession early on as both sides struggled to get to grips with the super slick conditions, but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 29th minute.

Jed Wallace made a pacy run down the right wing, beating off challenges from several defenders, before firing in a shot which took a deflection of Billy Coyne and went in.

Steve King nearly equalised three minutes later when he stabbed a shot goalwards after a scramble in the six yard box following a corner, but the chance was deflected over.

In the 36th minute it did become 1-1 when Mark Knee was caught dawdling on the ball by Spendlove and the midfielder ran into the area and thumped a shot which Chris Winterton had no chance of saving.

Cowley put the Beachboys ahead in the 54th minute when Spendlove’s free kick from the right wing found him totally free in the area, leaving him to head the ball into the net.

Whitehawk then started trying to apply their own pressure with several runs from Wallace, Danny Mills and Josh Jones causing problems for the defence.

This pressure paid dividends in the 70th minute when Wallace’s shot was not held by Michael Jordan, allowing Jones to slide in at the backpost to score.

The last 20 minutes saw both sides going gung-ho trying to find a winner with Concord having a big handball shout turned down with seven minutes left, but neither could retake the lead.

Concord boss Dan Cowley was happy with a point, adding he feels his team must keep improving.

“They're probably as good as side we’ve met in league this season so to go toe to toe with them was good,” he said.

“We’ve just got to keep trying to work defensively to really tighten up because ultimately the top teams win 1-0 and we don’t look like were going to win 1-0.”
