GAVIN Tomlin continued his fine scoring sequence to secure Southend United a 1-1 draw at League One Bury in the second round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Bury went in front midway through the first half with Matt Doherty converting a penalty.

But Tomlin’s seventh goal in six games was enough to hand Blues a replay.

The Shakers took the lead in the 33rd minute when SOuthend defender Ryan Cresswell was adjudged to have pushed Lenell John-Lewis while both players challenged for the ball in the air.

Doherty rolled the resulting spot-kick in to the bottom left hand corner of the net with Southend goalkeeper Paul Smith diving in the opposite direction.

However, the visitors were level just eight minutes, with Tomlin on target again.

The striker superbly worked his way in to the area before rolling a cool finish in to the bottom left hand corner of the net from six yards.

Both sides pushed men forward in the second half in pursuit of a late winner and it almost came for the Shrimpers in stoppage time when Michael Timlin curled a 20 yard shot against the foot of the left post before substitute Barry Corr fired the resulting rebound against the opposite upright.
