ESSEX Senior Cup holders Canvey were knocked out of the competition tonight following a lacklustre home defeat by higher-league Hornchurch.
An own goal from Gulls centre back Richard Orlu and a late strike from Andy Tomlinson booked Conference South Urchins a place in the quarter-finals.
Canvey were marginally the better team in an underwhelming first half as the sides largely cancelled each other out.
Former Peterborough United striker Leon Mckenzie had a lob ruled out for a tight offside on nine minutes in a tepid start.
Bradley Woods-Garness had Canvey’s two best attempts, the first a low drive which drew a fine low save from Joe Woolley, the second a curler narrowly wide from distance after he’d cut in onto his right foot.
The opener came on 68 minutes as Michael Spencer swung in a low cross and Orlu turned the ball into his own net.
And the visitors sealed the win five minutes from time when substitute Andy Tomlinson was played in and lifted the ball delicately over advancing keeper Ashlee Jones.
But there was a Ryman League cup win for Concord Rangers as they beat Bury Town 2-1 at the Aspect Arena.
Danny Glozier gave the Beachboys the lead with a 49th minute penalty and Craig Parker scored a 68th minute equaliser, before home captain Tony Stokes got the winner five minutes from time.
Canvey (4-4-2): Jones; Miller, Hayles, Orlu, Dumas; Chatting, Hawes (Gilbey 79), King, Gordon (Curran 73); Dennis, Woods-Garness (Hart 88).
