TAMIKA Mkandawire was thrilled to score his first goal in 16 months during Southend United' 2-1 win against Brentford on Tuesday night.

But the on loan Millwall midfielder does not expect to be hitting the back of the net again any time soon.

Mkandawire's deflected low, left footed shot was his first goal since netting for Millwall against Morecambe in the Carling Cup in August 2011.

And was delighted to work his way back on the score-sheet as Blues made it through to the southern section semi-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

“It was a nice feeling to get a goal again especially I don't score many,” said Mkandawire.

“In fact, I normally only get one a season so that's probably me done now but I'm just happy to be playing again and helping the team get good results.”

Mkandawire has helped to turn Blues' fortunes around since coming to the club in November and has yet to taste defeat in his six outings – a record the 29-year-old is keen to keep going.

“I haven’t been on the losing side yet and, touch wood, hopefully that can continue,” said Mkandawire.

“The lads are playing really well and we’re picking up some great results just like against Brentford.

“They are a very good League One side and while they may have made a few changes, it’s good to beat them.

“Next up is Fleetwood away and that will be another very difficult game.”

Saturday's match will be the first meeting between the two teams.

But Mkandawire feels the League Two newcomers will be fired up for the game after their manager Micky Mellon was dismissed last weekend.

“Teams often pick up a little bit when a new manager comes in so we're in for a very hard game,” said the midfielder.

“However, we've been playing really well and we're full of confidence right now too so hopefully we can get another good result and keep this good run we're on going.”
